Trentham Racecourse

Blue blooded royalty and the best bloodstock in the country have tramped the turf of Trentham Racecourse for well over 100 years.  Set in 67 hectares of perfectly manicured grounds and host to 12 glamorous races, the Wellington course is a prized destination for corporate race days and the central playground of New Zealand’s capital city.  Patrons have access to a range of comfortable facilities that vary from public stands and private corporate boxes to bustling bars and open air terraced lounges.  You can even bring your family along for picnics and some outdoor fun!

Trentham Racecourse is also officially fit for the Queen as Her Majesty has twice visited the venue to enjoy the glittering Cup Carnival with its multiple race days, live entertainment and home grown haute couture.  All in all, expect prestigious punting on the North Island – with the Queen’s thumbs up!

Premier Wellington Race Days at Trentham Racecourse

The moderate Wellington climate and unfettered enthusiasm for thoroughbred racing has resulted in all year round events at Trentham.  There’s a three-day bloodline bonanza featuring the iconic Wellington Cup, a series of Group 1 races with lucrative stakes and the 1600m Desert Gold Stakes.  This is an event for three year old fillies run in honour of the great bay mare that made history with a 19-run winning streak during World War One!

Cup Carnival

The unrivalled highlight of the Wellington thoroughbred racing season is the annual Cup Carnival, held over the last three Saturdays in January.  The action kicks off on Tui Super Saturday, with the Telegraph Handicap the race of the day.  With a combined purse of $1m, the race is one of the richest in the country and was snapped up by Sacred Star with Vinnie Colgan in the saddle in 2015.

Wellington Cup Race Day

Then it’s Wellington Cup day with its high fashion and prestigious featured races that include the $200,000 stake Thorndon Mile, run over 1,600 metres.  The popular Group 1 betting opportunity was claimed by 2014 New Zealand Derby winner, Puccini, in 2015 – a big bay colt known and loved for his brave front-running style!

In addition, punters can wager on the outcome of the oldest race in Wellington, the Group 2 Wellington Cup, where only the best thoroughbreds in New Zealand compete for the kudos and the ornate silver trophy.  Run from 1874 until the present day, the $250k race features Maygrove, ridden by Matthew Cameron, as the current champion.

Interislander Summer Festival Racing

The grand finale of the prolonged racing carnival at Trentham Racecourse is the Interislander Summer Festival, a hugely popular family day for Wellingtonians. Apart from the $70,000 featured race, the Desert Gold Stakes, there’s organised entertainment for the entire family that includes live stage performances and kid-friendly leisure activities such as Sack Races on the Track and Kids Fashion in the Field!

Trentham Racecourse Featured Thoroughbred Races

Other major events at Trentham Racecourse that attract thousands of dollars in betting stakes are the New Zealand Oaks and Captain Cook Stakes, both Group 1 races.  The Oaks is for three year old fillies run at a set weight over 2,400m and was won by Savaria, with Hayden Tinsley in the saddle, in 2015.  The Stakes, on the other hand, is run at weight-for-age over 1,600m and was the second major win for jockey, Danielle Johnson, in 2015 but this time on seven year old chestnut gelding, Shuka!

Trentham Racecourse Betting

With some of the most celebrated thoroughbred races contested at Trentham each year, betting is big business. Online bookmakers such as TabTouch, Betfair and Sportingbet offer odds on a wide range of betting markets that vary from win and place bets to novelty bets – first four, double, Trifecta, Exacta and Quinella.  In order to up the betting ante, many of the leading bookies provide bonus bets of up to $500 that can be used on quality Trentham races.

New Zealand Gambling Venues

Race tracks are not the only NZ gambling venues though...  Online and mobile sportbooks offer endless betting markets that include in-play punts on the full gamut of local and international sporting events – from rugby union and cricket, to tennis, rugby league and even darts and snooker.  As multi-faceted venues, you’ll also get to enjoy NZ casino events that involve other exciting games such as online pokies – and unlike the races where your horse either comes in or not, online pokies can provide a steady stream of wins!
